With summer finally upon us, this week’s sciencecast is dedicated to the topic of ice cream!!!
Yes, you heard it correctly … ice cream! The nations favourite, or at least my favourite, summertime treat.

Now, I caveat everything I’m about to say with the fact that if you have a certain favourite ice cream or you really fancy a certain one and it’s an infrequent treat, then please do go for it. No one gets fat or unhealthy eating one ice cream, same as no one gets slim or healthy eating one salad.
However, if you want to keep your health-conscious hat on a bit more then you could make your own version, here are 2 suggestions:
+ Banana & peanut butter ice cream – blend ripe bananas, dark chocolate, almond milk, peanut butter and cinnamon and freeze for an hour
+ Frozen berry yoghurt – blend frozen mixed berries, greek yoghurt and a tablespoon of honey until it’s a smooth ice cream texture.
If that’s a bit too much hassle and you’d prefer something shop bought then there are now various lower calorie, lower sugar varieties out there which from experience still taste really good.
MY RECOMMENDATIONS:
Halo top is an example of those (other brands are available as they say on the BBC), you can see in the picture to the right, how a tub has under a ¼ of the calories and sugar content than your regular Ben & Jerry’s.
I’ve pinched this image and the one below off “thefitnesschef’s” Instagram, which is worth a follow if you’re into that sort of thing. If you’re on the go or just fancy one of the classics rather than one of the new-age lower-calorie ones, then here’s some info that might help you select more wisely from a calorie perspective.
You can see that your ice lolly and sorbet varieties come out on top vs your more creamy varieties which are typically higher in saturated fat.
And let’s not forget that as I said at the top, with any of these things the poison is in the portion so, it can sometimes be easier to opt for a single serving like those above rather than the tub, which let’s face it, is tough to stop once you start. Keep an eye out for some brands that now do smaller portioned varieties like the Magnums Mini or Halo Top Mini below.
TAKE-HOMES:
So there you go, hopefully there’s one or two tips there for you. I’ll finish as I started by saying if you really fancy a white magnum and it’s a once-a-week treat over the summer, then go for it. Remember the 80/20 rule of 80% of the time you’re nailing your healthy eating and 20% of the time you’re enjoying the occasional treat like ice cream!
